Use a Clear and Professional Font Your resume should be clear and therefore you should use a clear font style for example Times New Roman or Arial.  Your font size should also be readable, between sizes 10 and 12. A clear and readable font will help your resume look professional. Reduce the blank spaces because they make the resume look sparse, causing distractions. Reducing the blank spaces on your resume makes it simpler for the interviewer to focus on the content of the resume rather than focusing on the white spaces.  The blank spaces can be reduced by either increasing the font size to around 12 or adding an additional section for example “Awards and achievements.” 3. Avoid the Irrelevant Information It is important to keep the resume as brief as possible without leaving any key information. The recruiters don’t have a lot of time to spend reading the resume. Graduating in 2018 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree felt like the beginning of an exciting chapter. With a wealth of knowledge and a heart full of ambition, I was ready to take on the world. However, like many fresh graduates, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of where to start. My initial plan was to secure a traditional job (9-5), but as months passed with limited success, I decided to explore the online freelancing world. The idea of freelancing seemed appealing. The prospect of working from anywhere and being my own boss was exciting. The First Steps into the Freelance World Determined to find my niche, I ventured into the comprehensive online world of freelancing. Upwork, a popular platform, seemed like a promising start. I began by exploring Upwork, one of the most popular freelancing platforms. I set up my profile, crafted a compelling pitch, and soon enough, I landed my first client. My first experience was a mixture of excitement and nerves. But, just as things were about to kick off, disaster struck. An innocent mistake nearly derailed my journey. Unfamiliar with Upwork’s rules about sharing contact information, my account was terminated just as I was getting started. Resilience and Rebirth Getting my Upwork account terminated was a harsh lesson, but giving up wasn’t an option. I took this setback as a learning opportunity. Determined to get back on track, I educated myself about Upwork’s guidelines and policies. With a clearer understanding of the platform’s rules, I created a new account and cautiously began again. This time, things went more smoothly. With renewed energy and a better grasp of the system, I began to attract more clients. Slowly but surely, I built a steady stream of work, which boosted my confidence and solidified my decision to pursue freelancing. I gradually started building my portfolio and reputation. The variety of projects I worked on was both challenging and rewarding. From virtual assistance to content writing, editing, accounting, data entry, and even image creation and editing, I found myself wearing many hats and loving every moment of it. Exploring Other Platforms and Expanding Horizons While Upwork was my primary platform, I didn’t limit myself to just one avenue. I explored other freelancing websites like Fiverr, Freelancer, PeoplePerHour, and Guru. Each platform had its unique ecosystem and clientele, and each offered different opportunities. I was fortunate to find additional clients through these platforms, further diversifying my experience and skill set. Working across multiple platforms provided invaluable lessons in adaptability and resilience. I learned to tailor my pitches to different audiences, honed my communication skills, and developed a keen eye for identifying quality clients. Each project was a new adventure, whether it was ghostwriting articles, providing virtual assistance, or managing social media accounts. The variety kept me engaged and continuously learning. The Struggles and Realizations of 2023 In 2023, however, I hit a rough patch. Despite my growing experience and an expanding client base, I felt stranded. The freelancing landscape had advanced, and the competition was fiercer than ever. The effort I was putting in seemed disproportionate to the number of clients I was attracting. I wanted to scale up and find more clients, but the process was more challenging than I had anticipated. The competitive nature of freelancing and the changing market made it harder to secure new projects. It was a sobering moment that made me reflect on my approach and strategies. In this period of uncertainty, I realized that the freelancing market had become more sophisticated. I realized that my methods might have become outdated, and I needed to adapt to the changing landscape. Clients were looking for not just skills but also specialization and proven expertise. My diverse experience, while valuable, needed to be framed in a way that showcased a unique value proposition. I had to redefine my brand and adapt to the changing demands of the market. Finding My Footing and Looking Forward Determined not to be left behind, I took proactive steps to reorient my freelance career. I sought feedback from peers, explored new marketing techniques, and refined my pitches. I invested in further education, taking courses to sharpen my skills and stay updated with industry trends. I also refined my marketing strategies, focusing on building a strong personal brand that highlighted my strengths and unique offerings. Networking became a crucial component of my strategy.
